August and September 2021 Capers
Capers, Meals and More!
Our last two Capers have taken on an interstate flair! In August we took pizza to the Stability Site along with all the other donations received that month. We imported two bags of socks from Arizona and my niece and nephew from Arizona and California respectively, rode with us to deliver all the goodies to the waiting hands of the 65 residents at the site. It was a beautiful sunshiny day and as usual the people welcomed us with open arms and lots of thank yous for the pizza and other items.
Then Saturday, September 25, we again journeyed to the Stability Site with a guest from Arizona. Just to make her feel at home, we ordered a day of bright sunshine and warmth. This time we brought chili and homemade corn muffins by Ron, one of Lenny’s board members.
Our main emphasis for delivery for September was on towels and washcloths, some of which were also imported from Arizona. We had spent several hours the week before rolling up sets of towels and washcloths and sorting out the clothing, shoes, personal items, and snacks we would be delivering. We also had a special delivery to make this month. One resident had wished for a sewing machine and we were able to provide it. Colleen, another board member, found a used machine that fits neatly into a suitcase. He was delighted and cried tears of joy, saying "you don’t even know what this means to me." We were almost as excited as he was.
For the October Caper, Meals and More delivery, we are looking for a tablet for one of the residents. They use it for reading, so it needs to be able to connect to the internet to download books and hold a charge. They do have places to charge electronic devices, but no electricity in their small personal spaces. Though we always take whatever is donated each month, in October we especially need coats. The weather is turning colder and while they have enclosed spaces to live and sleep, they do not have heat.
As always you can drop off donations at the Lenny and the DreamMakers worldwide headquarters – 4416 Sunset Drive W in University Place. We will be delivering items this month to the Stability Site in Tacoma on October 30.
